serial number

Check your service and support coverage - Apple Support will tell you a bit more about any Apple product through its serial number. It won’t tell you if the product is in good state (e.g. damage or service actions).

I need to know if its a genuine Apple product

Unknowable without unsealing it. Just the serial number won’t tell you if the offered product matches.

I find it hard to believe that a carefully chosen purchase sits untouched and unused for 8 months, only to be resold for the cheap.

… and country where it came from.

The country would follow from the Order Number, one of the secondary identifiers beside the serial number. E.g. something like “MQKW3LL/A” would end in “LL/A”, significant for USA (documentation and power cable). “MQKW3” would point to A2941 with color ‘Midnight’ and ‘256 GB storage’.

Date of purchase not available

That by itself is suspicious, in my book. An original invoice would be easy to include. A product with that serial was originally sold from Apple (or AAR) in early February.

There's no way to know without being able to see the Mac. Just because it's sealed - and it's very easy to reseal a box - doesn't mean it's authentic or not used. Even if the serial number would validate in Apple's warranty check, that wouldn't mean anything. Scammers often use real serial number or boxes with fake products or even when just shipping a brick.

Buying a product sight-unseen is generally a bad idea. Far too often that just leads to the buyer losing his or her money. If you can't find a seller in your area so you can examine the computer to make sure it's authentic, unlocked, and fully functional, don't buy. You may think you're saving money, but you're quite likely to just get heartache.

Regards.

We cannot look up Apple serial number history any more that you. We are end users too.

You can enter the number into this Apple support page from another device:

Check Your Service and Support Coverage

and determine if the device shows eligibility for coverage including AppleCare. Not definitive, but shols is say the device is ineligible, that is pretty much positive proof of problem.

However, I concur with my wise colleague that buying from a non-Apple source is fraught with frustration and potential financail harm. Most complaints here about discovering the device being pre-owned and cannot be activated started with exaclty what you are trying to do.

The massive world-wide demand for Apple products has created fertile ground for shady sellers. Don't fall into the pit!

I checked it on the Apple support site and it says coverage only until 2/2/2024. Not activated. so strange. I said that i will only buy it if I can activate the machine myself after registering with Apple. Let's see.

The warranty does not start with user activation but when the original Apple reseller reports the sale to Apple. So whoever the original reseller was sold the Mac, or at least the Mac to which the serial number belongs, back in January of this year. Hence you'll only have five months of warranty left if you buy this system.
