Fixing log in issues in your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on and after September 16th, 2024

If you use Apple Mail:

Apple Mail supports Modern Authentication by default when you setup the account as Outlook.com or Microsoft Exchange in your Mail app on your Mac. If you use Apple Mail and you are seeing password prompts or connection errors, this is most likely happening because your account got configured as basic authentication. To mitigate the issue, remove the account and add it back as Outlook.com or Microsoft Exchange on your Mac:

  1. Go to Settings Mail Accounts.
  2. First make sure to save your signature line or you may otherwise have to recreate it later.
  3. Tap the email account you want to remove from your iPhone or Mac, then tap Delete Account.

Add your account back to Apple Mail:

  1. Go to Settings > Mail.
  2. Tap Accounts, then tap Add Account.
  3. In the Add Account dialog, choose Outlook.com or Microsoft Exchange in your Mac Mail
  4. Recreate your old Hotmail, Live or Outlook.com existing account.

By performing these steps, it should eliminate the authentication errors when trying to read new email in a Hotmail, Live and/or Outlook.com account.
