Location Services not working

I've recently returned from abroad and since then the Location Services on my MacBook Air M1 stopped working. It seems like my MacBook can't find my current location and therefore all location dependent apps are not working. The clock remained set to the timezone of where I was abroad; Maps doesn't show my current location; Weather doesn't show anything for My Location ("Weather Unavailable").

in settings, Location Services are turned on, and also turned on for all apps; "Set time and date automatically" is turned on; "Set timezone automatically using your current location" is turned on; all system services are turned on.

If I turn automatic timezone off, manually set the time zone, then turn it back on, the timezone stays on whatever I set manually.

I've already tried the following to no avail:

  • turning location service off and on again.
  • restarting my MacBook.
  • starting my MacBook in safe mode, then turning location services off and on again.
  • first aid on all my drives.
  • changing time server.
  • using another wifi network (my iPhone as a hotspot - location services work fine on my iPhone).
  • re-installing the OS (Sonoma 14.6.1)

I also had NordVPN installed (been working fine for a long time), and I removed it before re-installing. didn't help.

I really don't know what else to do, and 99% of advice on the internet is pretty much the same - "check that location services are on".

any ideas?

thanks.
