convert multiple photos to jpg

I looked up online how to do this, and it tells me to <file><export> then select format, then <save>. When I go to do this, there is no save option, only export, which puts the photos on my desktop. Is there a way to just convert the photos and leave them in my photo app for easier access?

Photos is always preserving the imported original file as it is and does not modify it. As soon as we edit a photo, Photos will create a preview of the edited version as a JPEG and store this together with the original as one photo. But the original is never modified.

When you want to change the file format of an image in Photos, you have to export it as a jpeg, then reimport it and delete the previous version.

Photos never changes the original file, so its file type will never change. Pictures you see on the screen are not files, so there's no file type. For edited pictures, Photos just remembers the editing steps that you made. So no edited picture is saved, and there's no file and no file type there.

When you need an edited picture, Photos reapplies the editing steps you made to make a new file-- that's what Export does, and that's where you have control over the file type. And that only makes sense when you are saving a file for use elsewhere.

Except for the original file, there's really no file types in Photos, and access to pictures has nothing to do with file type. There's no advantage to file types until you Export.

Where do you think that you need easier access?
