Where are backup files stored?

If you have TimeMachine running and it's icon is on the Menu bar, click on it and look for "Browse TimeMachine Backups". You show see a mulit-layered window appear with a time-line on the right hand side of backups.

Restore items backed up with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support (CA)

They are stored on the backup drive you configured for Time Machine.
