How to stop all my windows from jumping to the sides when I click on desktop?

I'm not sure which update this problem started with. Months ago I started having an annoying issue where if I left click on the Desktop, all my open windows zip off to the sides and top of my screen and just appear as grey bars and I have to click on them to get them back. How can I turn this off?

Go to System Settings, Desktop & Dock. Turn off Stage Manager. (About mid way down the list)

System Settings -> Desktop & Dock ->

Click wallpaper to reveal desktop -> Only in Stage Manager

If you are using the traditional macOS window manager, setting this will just bring the Finder into focus when you click on the desktop.

If you are using the Stage Manager window manager, then there is no escape, as that is a baked in Stage Manager feature.
