My Mac air 2019 with Sonoma 14.6.1 continually freezes up. I am not sure if it is hardware or error in the OS or the combination of software plus add-ons. I get lost in what I've done and not done and spend lots of time rebooting and finding what I was working on. Some things take forever, and my stress levels go through the roof. And my docs want me to reduce stress!

I've been told to create a new admin id to try to figure where the problem may be. I did so and have had no problems for a few hours. So that leads me to think I don't need to reinstall the OS. The problems are either in the software I use, settings or add ons.

In the past, I've created the new id and logged in. But I can't do much other than surf the internet. And since that doesn't mimic what I usually do, I am not sure I'm getting a valid read.

I can't really do much with this id. All my data files use the other id, as well as the software programs I need. What's the best way to transfer programs over one-at-a-time with the data, so I can work with it on this id.

When I'm using the computer, I will use Firefox. Mail (outlook + gmail), OneNote, Word, Excel, 1Password, Calendar, Messages, Photos, Zoom, and Contacts. I've got a bunch of Firefox add-ons, and switch them in and out as needed. I use other things now and then, but the above are most common. It's not uncommon for me to have 10 windows open in firefox.

This problem has gone on for multiple years and is getting worse. The computer freezes up. I can't move between programs. I can't use force-quit. The only thing I can do is press the on switch to reboot. And I'm sure that's messing up a lot of files.

`

So, how can I "transfer" programs and data from one userid to the other? Or is there a way to access them more easily?

Thanks.

For a test, restart your mac in Safe Mode and login to your normal account. Safe Mode is slow but if otherwise things work normally you will have confirmed that the problem is caused by some third party software modifications or add ons that run in your account. (All these are disabled in Safe Mode, which only loads the bare essentials)

To try to ascertain what specifically might be responsible: Please run Etrecheck and post its full report here.

Use the “additional text” button and paste the report into the text box.

This is a diagnostic tool. It does not change anything, but will give us a portrait of your system and third party add ons so we can look for likely culprits.

Thank you. I don't know how you got the report but the form in which it was pasted it is very hard to read.

It seems to have lots of added text that does not help.

Here is it how you can do this in such a way that the report is readable:

1) Have Etrecheck run to do its thing

2) When it finishes, click Share Report->Copy

3) In a reply here, click the additional text button (like you did above) and paste.

That's it.
