Why does my iPhone show "Maybe" in Contacts for my wife's name?

When I get a text from my wife, the popup on my iPhone says "Maybe: (my wife’s name).

I never had this issue before. She’s stored as a contact and have been for many years. I haven’t changed anything and all is same as before.

When I open the message app, she’s listed there with her name like always. This happens only with the popup notification when I receive a message. It’s very irritating. It’s also says the message is to me and also herself, like it was a group message.

i have turned off EVERYTHING with Siri under messages and also under contacts so it’s nothing I can do there. I also did delete her as a contact and added again, and also signed out and in again from iCloud. Nothing helps. Still get this “maybe”. Any suggestions?

Follow up to myself.

I finally found a “fix”.

the other “solutions” in this thread did nothing for me. The comments about iCloud disassociating phone with email got me thinking. So I went into my wife’s contact info and removed her email address. When I went back to the messages app a new second wife thread appeared with all the messages that must have got sent from her email instead of phone number. I just deleted this thread and then re-added her email back to her contact info. Notifications went back to normal.

I do understand that this might not be a good solution to some people though if the number of messages send from email is large and includes messages that you don’t want to lose but I was lucky that there was only a couple that got separated out and none were anything important or save worthy.

I'm experiencing the same problem and now it is happening in reverse to another one of my contacts. She is on IOS 18.1 and when I text here now it says Maybe: You and Andrew.

I have tried all of the suggestions in this thread and nothing has worked. It was fine in IOS 17.x this has only happened since IOS 18.x upgrade.

I also have an issue where no notifications are received in Apple Car Play unless I'm on the Car Play screen. These bugs need to be fixed as it is very frustrating.

Well, it was good while it lasted. The siri setting fix lasted for about a month, but the issue is back again. Now instead of notifications saying maybe, it just lists the phone number like this “xxx-xxx-xxx to (wife’s name from her contact card) and (my name from my contact card).

My wife’s number is saved under her contact card, and its associated with her icloud account.

It appears to be a bug in ios 18 that is dissociating contact identifiers from saved contacts.

I also have a separate issue where imessages are dissappearing in iOS after a short period of time, that also started when iOS main version released. Never had these issues running iOs beta 18 prior to September.

The level of LIVID I’ve hit with Apple on this iOS update is unparalleled. Going on close to 2 months. Filed a report with Apple and per my communication with them every couple of weeks, ‘no update but they assure me they’re working on it’. 0.00% thinks anyone at Apple is working on it. Started after the 18 update. ONLY an issue with my husband’s number. Started that his contact was his name and ‘maybe’ his name. Then his contact wouldn’t stay in my pinned threads. Now I cannot iMessage him whatsoever. Two. Months. Never had an issue with Apple in ALL of my years with them. It’s making me LOSE MY MIND.

Same exact issue. Only happening with my wife. Weird thing is that it just started for me this week when she had to go travel for work out of state. I’ve been on io18 since June and it’s been fine.

nine of the solutions in here have worked.

additionally about a month ago an entire year of mine and my wife’s messages history just disappeared from the phone. It’s still visible on my Mac so I know it’s in iCloud but the phone is not showing it anymore.

some bizzare behavior since updating to io18

This problem has gotten even worse for me. My husband has 2 phone numbers and even when I try to text his personal number it automatically shows as going to his work phone. I’ve tried blocking his work number and texts he sends to me from his personal phone still show as coming from his work phone. When I type in his personal phone number with iMessage on, it automatically thinks I’m texting his work phone and fills in his name (even though I’ve deleted the number and blocked the contact). I’ve also turned off Siri learning for Contacts, WhatsApp, and whatever I can turn it off for.

This is beyond frustrating! I really hope it can get fixed soon

I'm having this same issue. I have an iPhone 16 pro running IOS 18.1.1. It started a few days ago with my partner's personal and work phone numbers. When she messages me its like we're in a group chat with both her phone numbers. I deleted her work phone number off of my phone completely, and even went so far as to block the number and it still sends some messages to her work phone. I've tried all the "fixes" I could find online and nothing works. The old phone number even pops up in my messages instead of her name, until I click on the thread and then it reverts back to her name, but the old phone number is still there somehow. I have messages on my Mac and iPad, and it works fine on there, but my iPhone is screwed. This is a huge issue because now I'm hesitant to text her anything personal since it might go to her work phone number which her IT people have access to.
