same here, and before I get treated like a toddler with their first Smart phone… I have already checked everything that could possibly be an issue, location services are on, Siri responses are sent to prefer spoken responses, backgrounding is on, I'm connected to the Internet, I'm on Wi-Fi, I'm not an airplane mode, siri will tell me a story, siri will tell me a joke, but will not tell me the effing weather.
Think of it this way: Siri is super smart, but it also needs information from the web to be truly helpful. Imagine a library with tons of books on all sorts of subjects. Siri can still use its knowledge to answer basic questions you might have, like what the capital of France is, even without the library. But if you ask something that requires more research, like finding the best pizza place nearby or checking the weather this weekend in Paris, Siri needs to access the information online just like you would at the library.
So, if Siri seems a little off its game, check your WiFi or cellular data connection to make sure it's working properly. That should help Siri get back to its super-smart and super-helpful self!

Probably your device may not be connected to the internet.
Connecting to Wi-Fi is the first part and then getting connected to the Internet is the second

There is no “Talk to Siri” option. There is a “TYPE to Siri” option, but as others have reported that does not work. 🤷♂️
This worked for me. Thank you.
Thank you!!!!!
This worked for me. I’ve been so frustrated. Siri is back in my CarPlay.
New setting “prefer spoken responses” was off. Default was on “prefer silent response”
I have “prefer spoken responses” on and still does not fix the problem for me.
Go to setting > Siri > Prefer spoken response (make sure this is clicked)
Ok I just fixed it. The problem is as it seems in iPhone mirroring settings. So I asked Siri (on iPhone) “how will the weather be today” and it gave me different error something like “you have to change in settings. Do you want to change this one time or all the time in Siri”. I responded with “all the time in Siri”.
then Siri on Apple Watch worked.
I figured out the solution because I thought I was crazy too. If you have your phone on vibrate she will not speak back to you. If you go into your settings under Siri and then hit Siri responses you have to change your preference to “prefer spoken responses” as it is set on “automatic.” Hope this helps.🫶🏻
Siri will also not speak in IOS 18 when I ask her how far to a certain city or destination. It just shows the distance and time to drive on the screen, much like it just shows the temperature when you ask for the temperature. I hope Apple fixes this soon.
I've just read through all the pages here (yes and tried everything suggested) but the issues, although slightly different, seem to have a pattern about them in that everyone seems to have had a functional Siri, updated and then a variety of different problems render Siri unusable in CarPlay.
In my case I popped out for messages around 10am, called home and sent some messages through Siri on CarPlay and everything worked. Arrived home and updated to IOS18. At around midday same day I went out to the golf and tried phoning home on the way. Siri came up on the screen, said the usual "Uh huh?" and I asked him to phone home. At which point the icon swirled for a second, froze then CarPlay disappeared and I was back to the car settings. Same for every action with Siri having to answer audibly and do something. Maps still works visually in CarPlay as I can see the blue line, turns etc.
Siri also works perfectly well without CarPlay and will respond as usual. This IS a Siri in CarPlay issue.
The only thing that changed was the updating of the IOS.

They may be the way it was intended to work but the implementation was buggy. It does not speak aloud if sitting on your desk without anyone looking at it. It puts the answer on the screen without saying anything whether or not you’re looking at it. Buggy.
Same issue here (Iphone 15 Pro Max), Siri can't spoken responses after upgrade iOS18 and this works for me (I'm using Automatic spoken response):
Hope it's help.
Retrain Siri with your voice
As others suggested, toggling voice responses on and off, did fix the issue. However, when I ask her to turn do not disturb on or off, she still says it’s already set to that.
