I had the same problem... Here is the FIX... Settings>Siri>Voice.... Select American (Voice 1) and allow the download to complete.. I did it for all 5 voices and allowed all to download.. Now it works great... Also under Siri responses I selected prefer spoken response..
Search Siri on setting
> Scroll down and find Siri application
> Enable “Hey Siri” option in Talk to Siri
> Lock/ unlock your phone.
Hope this helps!
18.0.1 released, same ol' same ol' Siri not talking on many operations unless set to 'preferred spoken responses.'
This is correct, I changed this in Siri settings> responses and it worked.
Maybe restart the phone
It is definitely the iOS 18 update. I have a iPhone 15 Plus and I can’t even get Siri to send a text message or play music now. Never had a single problem before this update. I contacted Apple and they said they haven’t had any reports but did tell me they would be in contact.
I had the same problem so I just started messing with my phone. I went into My accessibility setting And I turned off vocal shortcuts, and I turned a few other things off and then all of a sudden it started working. I don’t know if that would help but my Siri wasn’t working for a couple of days either after downloading the new update.
Maybe try not being condescending in your responses. Some of us are pretty good at troubleshooting and telling if the issue is due to an update. It’s the OS update that is causing Siri to be erratic, laggy or otherwise unresponsive. Too many of us are having similar issues, when Siri worked fine prior to IOS 18. In my case she completes an action before even responding, or does not respond at all. She may or may not take a text message dictation. She’ll often tell me to unlock my phone to complete an action, through that hadn’t been the case before. It’s the OS, it broke Siri.
I am having the same issue. It only seems to work when I select prefer spoken responses but I don't wanna leave that checked because I don't want spoken responses when my phone is in silent mode. I checked all my settings I reset Siri and I even restarted my phone nothing worked accept selecting prefer spoken responses.
I think it has something to do with apple intelligence. If you say “hey siri” apple intelligence takes over. Try turning it off then saying it to see if that works but then you won’t have the apple intelligence features. I could be wrong
Occam’s razor my friend. If everything is working fine for years, then you update the OS, and then something fails, it’s probably due to the update. Here, the Siri setting on response type preference is new due to the upgrade. Let’s not run people down rabbit holes….
My issue is exactly the same as JPark275. Siri will read out loud a story and a joke, but will only display the weather and not say it verbally. Basically I if I ask her to do anything, 95% of the stuff is now nonverbal. Very few things she will actually answer out loud; she will only display the information and not say it. Also, she no longer will reboot the phone when I ask her to restart it. Then if I ask her to turn on or off “do not disturb”, she says it’s already on or off even though it isn’t. She still will switch it to whatever I say, but she always says it’s already set to what I’m asking her to change it to.
I've just read through all the pages here (yes and tried everything suggested) but the issues, although slightly different, seem to have a pattern about them in that everyone seems to have had a functional Siri, updated and then a variety of different problems render Siri unusable in CarPlay.
In my case I popped out for messages around 10am, called home and sent some messages through Siri on CarPlay and everything worked. Arrived home and updated to IOS18. At around midday same day I went out to the golf and tried phoning home on the way. Siri came up on the screen, said the usual "Uh huh?" and I asked him to phone home. At which point the icon swirled for a second, froze then CarPlay disappeared and I was back to the car settings. Same for every action with Siri having to answer audibly and do something. Maps still works visually in CarPlay as I can see the blue line, turns etc.
Siri also works perfectly well without CarPlay and will respond as usual. This IS a Siri in CarPlay issue.
The only thing that changed was the updating of the IOS.

it's really frustrating, now Siri settings say if you choose "automatic" rather than "prefer voice responses" or "prefer silent responses"
At least for me right now, Siri does not speak, only shows responses on the screen… Even if my phone is NOT on silent!
The problem is if I choose "prefer spoken responses" that it says that Siri will speak them even if your phone is on silent
if I choose automatic, Siri does not speak ever so it is the same as if I'm choosing "prefer silent"
I hope someone fixes this because I like to have it on automatic but I like to hear Siri be able to speak when I'm driving and ask Siri a question
This is how I figured something has changed because I was just driving and needed to ask Siri a question
but Siri would not speak
When I asked about the volume, it said the volume was at maximum""
Will it respond to you when you send a text and tell you What you’re sending and if you wanna send it??
This response is not helpful. Siri will do everything but read directions Siri looks up directions but will not navigate out loud when in CarPlay.
