Signed Out of Gmail,Google, & Google Auth on ios18
This issue is solved but I just want to explain it so you all can help people if you havent already quickly remedied this issue, i wasnt able to find the information though.
So if a user with 2-factor authentication activated on their account is signed out of their mobile device, they can no longer regain access if they do not have a passkey stored on their device.
- for example, my passkey was stored on my computer but not my iphone.
- on the iphone with the latest update for ios18, they have removed "passwords" from the general settings app and gave "passwords" its own application to store passkeys and anything else relative to sensitive information or passcodes on the device.
- So the issue is there is no passkey available, that's fine because you could still theoretically sign in with the authenticator app right? Incorrect, because the app signed out when gmail signed you out, and the google account will automatically sign you out as well.
- So now you have no access on your mobile device to your email/google account. Let's say you still have sign in access to your account on a web browser, and all of this started because you initially changed your password on chrome, which logs you out of every device immediately. This is a dilemma clearly because there is one sided access on chrome.
Answer
You could try using the authenticator app on chrome if you already have codes stored on the plugin, but if not then you have no access outside of the browser (on mobile) and wont be able to regain access unless you add Backup Codes. The user would then need to close the google apps they are receiving the prompts on "gmail, google auth, google app" to refresh then try the sign in process again by going to "Try another way" and using the "Backup Codes" option.
