Using late '14 iMac as external display
Can I use my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) as an external display connected to new macbook pro?

Not directly, as with Target Display Mode, no. There may be software that would extend the display, though I don't of any and if such exists it's likely to be too laggy to be useful for anything that requires quick response such as gaming. External monitors are very inexpensive these days, so it will probably be more satisfactory if you just get an external and put that old iMac out to pasture.
Regards.
Thank you for that response. Looks like I missed the cutoff of mid '14 where the monitor could be used as only a display. May be time to retire the old iMac as suggested
Target Display Mode went away when the first 27" 5K Retina iMac – the one you have - came out.
not just the org imac but the newer macbook pro can't use imacs that support target display mode as a monitor
but the imac use a lot! more power acting as target display than any normal computer monitor you can connect to the macbook pro so if you get one you have that going for you which is nice.
