IOS 18 and Empty Gmail Folders

Updated iPhone and iPad to IOS 18 and all Gmail folders created by me are EMPTY. (The missing emails are still in the Gmail folders on MacBook.) The only emails on iPhone and iPad are in Inbox, Sent, Junk, and All Mail folders.

I have deleted Gmail account from iPad, restarted iPad and added Gmail account back onto iPad but folders are still empty.

I noticed Filters on folders are all set to include "Unread" and thought problem might be these missing emails are all read, so are filtered out. I changed filters to include "To: Me" and "Cc: Me" but the emails still do not appear.

Yes exactly! I have spent several hours on multiple calls with numerous Apple Support Techs and last Friday they acknowledged I’m not the only person reporting this IOS 18 issue. They have taken screen shots of my empty Mail folders contrasted with same Gmail folders containing emails, and made a video of those empty Mail folders disappearing and reappearing right in front of our eyes.

They have scheduled another call in two hours to let me know what progress they have made to resolve this. Last week they said it will likely involve release of IOS 18.1. In the meantime we will have to use Gmail to view contents of our folders (Gmail calls them Labels) and to move new emails from Inbox to our folders (Labels) or to Trash.

I will defer to the Apple Support folks about why your folders seem empty even when they should pass the filters, but I want to try one more time with my point about making sure your filters are really turned off.

When you have any filter active, there should be a blue dot above the right side of the list of messages. That's what you click to change the details about the filters.

If you click on the words "Disable Message Filter" the dot should turn "not blue" and disengage the filters for that folder.

The individual filter switched then become gray because they are all inactive.

Sorry I don’t see a “dot at the top NOT blue”. I can’t disable filtering for those folders entirely. If I do deselect all filters and click DONE, the filter resets to “Unread”.

I have spent a couple hours on the phone with Apple Support today and the third tech I spoke with sees similar issues with other users so she expects a new update will be necessary to resolve.

This is such a weird situation. Not only are folders empty, but some folders randomly disappear right before my eyes, and eventually reappear on their own - still empty 🤯

Thanks for the visual! I do see that “NOT blue” dot next to active folder name that appears above emails, BUT only on my MacBook. I tinkered with that button there and see it turn blue when I choose a filter (and naming filter below folder name) and back to white when I remove filter, with emails in that folder disappearing and reappearing just as I’d expect.

However, on my iPad the active folder name appears with emails (in the few folders that do have emails, like Junk folder) listed below Folder name. The button is at bottom left corner of screen and there is no Disable or Enable choice. Choices are Unread, Flagged, To Me, CC Me, Only Mail with Attachments, Only from VIP, and Only Mail Sent Today.

The default on my folders is Unread, resulting in zero emails just as I’d expect. If I click Unread filter off and DONE, the Unread filter stays ON. Clicking on To Me filter still finds no emails, which of course should find all of them.

Thank you for your perseverance helping me. I truly appreciate you! I’m stumped and welcome any other ideas you have 🤔
