macOS 15: how to move the Dock from one screen to another

I've upgraded to macOS 15 and it stopped letting me move the Dock. I'm on a MacBook Pro with an external screen. I have them arranged so the external screen is the main screen (with the menu bar) and the laptop screen is positioned below centred.

In the past, I would be able to move the Dock from the laptop screen bottom to the external screen bottom by dragging the mouse slowly down at the very edge of the bottom of the external screen, and the Dock would move to this spot.

Apple must have switched this off for no reason. So how do I do this now? The Dock system preferences got nothing. The Display preferences got nothing.

RESOLVED!

I just installed the upgrade to macOS 15.1, and the dock can now be placed at the bottom edge of an external screen when the laptop screen is virtually (and physically) placed underneath. The app switcher also displays correctly on the main (external) screen.

Please explain how? The process of hovering at the lower left corner of my upper (external) monitor is not working to bring the dock up. Is there another way?

I am not sure what you are asking me to explain... could you be more specific?

I believe it has by now been sufficiently discussed that the Dock cannot be placed at the bottom of a display if another display is immediately below it. This is a change from previous versions. There are several posts that pictorially show what works and what doesn't. I don't even use the Dock myself, on my mac it is permanently hidden and only really use it in connection with questions on this forum.

The point is that I have a MBP sitting on my desk with the external screen in front of me. So the natural configuration is precisely as per berkaksen's screenshot: laptop screen at the bottom and main screen above (ie. right in front of me). The screens are NOT next to each other, they are one above the other. As the external screen is the main screen (larger than the laptop screen), the dock should be placed on the main screen. This is indicted by the menu bar in the display arrangement settings, but the Dock won't move the way it used to move. So now my work-around is to configure the screens virtually next to each other, but that's not right as they are not physically next to each other.

I understand the relative positions of the screens.

The issue is that since the bottom of the larger screen is now not an edge of your combined displays.

The Dock usually pops up when the cursor bumps into the edge of the screen, but now your cursor will just pass on to the laptop screen.

Did you try bumping into the parts where the top is wider? - see the illustration below.

Also: is it not strange to have the Dock be in the middle of your combined screen? I suggest that with this configuration it would make more sense to place the Dock on one side.

this is my display arrangement and the dock setting is set to be positioned at the bottom, maybe the new update selects the lower monitor to put it on the bottom of the work space? before the update this wasn't an issue and it was easy done by just like Marcus explained "In the past, I would be able to move the Dock from the laptop screen bottom to the external screen bottom by dragging the mouse slowly down at the very edge of the bottom of the external screen, and the Dock would move to this spot."

Thanks. Yes, before the upgrade to macOS 15, those two areas left and right ("try here" / "or here") were precisely the areas where we'd be able to drag the mouse pointer so the Dock would move to the external screen.

Re: "is it not strange..." – no, it's not. It's the perfect position as it's close to the action. Whereas if the Dock is all the way in the basement, I'd have to move my mouse pointer all the way to the bottom screen all the time in order to open an app.

It worked for years, so we just want Apple to fix this issue and reinstate what worked perfectly well.

Two possible workarounds for this:

1) try the Dock on the left or right side

2) rely less on the Dock. There are other ways to launch applications. My favorite is Spotlight, e.g. press Command-space, type Saf press enter, there you have Safari. Likewise, just type the first two or three letters and press enter to launch any application. No mouse involved!

Some people prefer Launchpad, wich requires just one key press and then you have a screen akin to what you'd see on iPhone.

No thanks. The suggestions you come up with are not actual fixes. What's next? Apple will release a macOS that's just black and white, and you'll suggest just get used to it and imagine the colour?

This used to work perfectly, and this post is about either identifying a way to move the Dock into place, or getting Apple to fix this bug. Suggesting to just "rely less on the Dock" is plain silly.
