Video Playback on iOS 18 is Broken - Video size is small and timeline ends early when setting video to full frame or zooming in. Serious bug.

Video Playback on iOS 18. I use video playback to show slow-motion video frame by frame to my students and the video can only be shown at like 3/5 of the screen size (just like Apple fouled up screenshot editing about a year ago)

If you try to view video in the full screen you can’t scrub through and see time stamps or play frame by frame sliding left to right. It’s absolutely ridiculous. 2 out of 3x the video timeline finishes fully right and I haven’t watched the full clip.

Here’s a video showing the issue how at the small default size I can see the entire timeline and play the full video from beginning to end, but when I go to full screen and/or zoom in or move the screen around the timeline doesn’t work and you can’t scroll through the full video!

Need the video to not condense in size on the screen and play the full height / width of the screen. Also not have the text of the location showing above the screen. Way too much clutter. The reduced size of the video for editing issue started with photos several updates ago

The updated “Photos App” has ruined the use of video playback. I use video playback on my phone everyday for my work, analyzing high performance athletes. Because when you record video you cannot go from 0.5-7x zoom you use hi-res and pitch and zoom while dragging through video.
For what ever reason someone decided to remove this feature, yet keep the ability on IpadOS 18.2.1 does allow this? How can the developers make this kind of mistake?

i am thankful i do not need to tap the correct miniature thumbnail at the bottom to open it up in order to drag through the video so there has been improvements, but why is IOS unable to keep the video scrolling feature while zooming but my 3rd gen iPad Air on IpadOS18 can?
I have discussed this with hundred of clients who all hate this bug

So tell Apple. Have all of your clients tell Apple.

Also, consider getting an app that's designed for professional use rather than a consumer-grade one.

I hate this upgrade for the Photos app too.

Not sure if it fully solves the issue, but if you pinch out slightly with 2 fingers, the video display size will increase to cover the whole screen. Most of the time it seems to still allow playback of the whole video while “zoomed in”. Certainly taking some getting used to. I prefer how it was before and really dislike the new scrubbing.

UPDATE: in iOS 18.1 I was unable to play any videos for about 2 hours after the update. I guess it needed time to propogate. I was getting a circle progress loading bar most of the time or nothing and it would freeze and never play. After a couple of hours of waiting I’m able to play videos now. It does appear the bug of zooming in and scrolling and only being able to see 1 second of the video is fixed but it is still thet wretched scroll bar / scrubber and the small window. 2 positive updates in Photos are that you can finally drag your albums up an down to reorder them (albeit the functionality id a bit finnicky), and with their new AI you can type a description of photos/videos in Search and it retrieves items that match that query. This is very good. However the issue with video playback, small window, terrible scroll bar / scrubber, etc still exists, so please keep sending feedback to Apple on the links mentioned several times. Do it for both iPhone and for the Photos app. Search Apple feedback iPhone and Apple feedback photos and you’ll find the links on google.

Apple's participation in this user-to-user forum is largely limited to making sure that people follow the rules. The only time they respond in a thread is if there is a matter of health or safety. They will not be responding in this thread.

You can certainly let them know your thoughts here:

I absolutely hate the latest update too. The Photos app is absolutely horrific. I can’t stand it! One of the worst issues is definitely with the videos and photos not showing and not playing in full screen, but I was able to fix that by just tapping the video, which makes it to go full screen.

However, doing that makes you lose access to the scrubber—and the new scrubber is awful! I can’t stand it. Apple really needs to get their priorities straight, what are we doing Apple???

Here’s something else to watch out for: I recorded a 20-minute video, but the playback would stop at around 3 minutes every time. I reset my phone, closed the Photos app multiple times, and thought I had lost all my footage. It seemed like the file was corrupted.

I’m not sure if it happened because I used the new pause feature and locked my phone, or if there was some other issue causing the corruption. But iOS 18 has been such a mixed bag—it’s great in some ways but also feels very unfinished and unpolished, which is so unlike Apple. Like it’s ok, just wait a little longer and finish it and make it work right, makes y’all look bad!

Thankfully, I managed to fix the video by importing the clip into an app called VideoShop (it’s a paid app, unfortunately). I’m sure iMovie or another editing app would work too. Once I imported and exported the clip, it worked all the way through. But before exporting, it wouldn’t even play properly in VideoShop. It’s crazy that we have to resort to these workarounds.

Honestly, Apple has been ridiculous lately—it’s genuinely upsetting.

Hope this helps someone.

I tried to use my phone to replay a work conference seminar to take notes and was surprised to see the video interface was totally changed on my work phone. Brentgrab's youtube video exactly demonstrates the problems with the video playback in iOS 18 in the Photos app. The scrubber bar was eliminated; it should return because it is much more intuitive to see where to scrub visually rather than on a blank bar. The viewing screen is by default zoomed out with useless buttons on the sides. If you make the video full screen, you lose the ability to navigate through the video at all. If you zoom into the video and then try to play it again, it only plays the very beginning of the video. The functionality of this part of the OS is totally broken and needs to be restored to the functionality available in the most recent version of iOS 17 as soon as possible.

Just an update for everyone… I spent 3 hours on the phone and via email with Apple tech support this week. Finally they received a separate 4 minute video I made for them while on a phone call not only walking the tech people through issues one by time in detail but also showing in the screen recording the various comments and feedback on this YT Video and on the Apple support forum post.

I’m crossing my fingers that they might actually start addressing this but let’s not hold our breath. The most important thing everyone can do is to write comments on the Apple feedback submission form here for the Photos App and for iPhone in general:

Feedback - Photos - Apple

Feedback - iPhone - Apple

And also keep submitting feedback with your and your family/friends phones right on this forum post.

I will post an update if they give me any useful new info / updates / affirmative next steps and if anything changes for the better in any subsequent iOS updates I’ll post that here.

Thanks so much for everyone’s active participation in this thread so that we as a group of users worldwide that actually care about details, making things better, and common sense usability can get our voices heard and seen and hopefully have this crummy iOS 18 update to the Photos app and video playback bugs rolled back / fixed asap.

It’s wild. I can’t believe it still isn’t resolved. I think 18.2 comes out this coming week. If they don’t have the timeline / scrubber / thumbnail preview at the bottom I am probably going to switch to an Android. It’s completely inhibited my ability to do my job with coaching and video playback, as well made it so laborious to search through video and find certain spots to post on Instagram and YouTube. As well the screenshots being tiny too make it impossible to draw on the screen and type on the screen when it’s a small

area of the display.

Please make sure y’all keep submitting feedback/bug reports to Apple specifically for the photos app here:

UPDATE 12/11/24: iOS 18.2 has been released publicly. SOME issues with video feedback are fixed such as videos now stay open in full screen when playing, pausing, and tapping. BUT the scroller is still that little slider and it’s not as easy to control as the thumbnail scrubber found in 17.0 and below. Also the play/pause button is way on the left side of the screen. The time stamp is showing again too which is good but It’s just still too difficult to “seek” for a specific part of a video and grab frames when compared with how it used to be. It’s especially difficult the longer the video it is.

It does appear Apple is listening to feedback but how 18.0 and 18.1 even got to that point is baffling. I’m happy that some things are slightly better now but I’d prefer it to just go back to how it used to be.

Dec 28, 2024 12:50 PM in response to maccalvin5

Can’t believe it. Even in 18.2 there is still issues with erratic playback of slow mo video not showing the entire length of the video. Often I have to force close and come back into Apple Photos to play back a video and see its entire duration. About 1 out of every 3 times the video only plays a couple of seconds of the video no matter the length. How this is still broken is laughable.
