Broken: Universal Control Keyboard Mouse Sharing OS Sequoia 15.0

After MacOS Sequoia 15.0 was installed Sept 18, 2024 (on both my MBP 2021 14in and MM 2018), the linking of keyboard and mouse between MBP and MM is now broken (universal control). If I can get it to work for 1 minute, it then breaks, despite the display icon showing that such sharing is active on both devices. Yes, I have restarted Bluetooth, WiFi, and both devices too.

The "universal control" to share the keyboard and mouse seems broken and buggy, even if it works for a minute, then breaks.

Yes, the keyboard and mouse are official Apple products too.

I use this feature all the time, and hope there will be a bug fix very soon.

Anyone else having this problem? Any solutions?

Mac mini, macOS 15.0

I agree with @TCC Bob.....I updated both the MM and the MBP to Sequoia 15.1, then restarted both machines, then turned on the sharing of keyboard and mouse.

It appeared to be working fairly well most of day. However, I still experience intermittend "drops" and "freezes", where the mouse AND keyboard control seem to be frozen, and stuck between the two machines.

I have been able to get the universal control back by using the MBP's touchpad and keyboard, then toggle and hit esc on one or both machines. So far, that has "unstuck" the keyboard and mouse when that has happened (which originally this approach was not working).

Therefore, with Sequoia 15.1 updates and restarts, things have definitely improved. The function is not flawless.

For Apple, having this function achieving only a "functional and intermittently annoying standard" still leaves room for improvement.

After upgrading both macbook's to Sequoia 15.5 UAC broke for me also. These are the steps I took in order (literal) to resolve this issue:

  1. Sign out of iCloud on both laptops
  2. System Settings > Network > Firewall > Options > (if active) disable Universal Control
  3. Remove bluetooth pairing for keyboard/keypad and disable bluetooth
  4. System Settings > Displays > Advanced > disable the 'link to Mac or iPad' options
  5. Disable any active VPN

Restart the laptop NOT originally paired with the keyboard/keypad - don't restart the 2nd laptop just yet

Enable Bluetooth and pair the peripherals (mouse/Keypad)

Re-enable all options above except 5 - VPN waiting until you've successfully signed back into iCloud

Restart the other macbook

Re-enable all options except 5 -VPN again waiting until you've successfully signed back into iCloud...give it a few minutes

Double check all the options have been set back to their previous settings et voila....

Re-enable VPN if needed

Hopefully this works for you!

Had a similar issue: keyboard and mouse failed to share between to the nearby MacMini M2 and MacBookPro, both with macOS Sequoia 15.3.2

At the same time the clipboard content still was shared, and I was able to turn on Display mirrorring / extending either way. Just the mouse/keyboard problem.

Appears, this problem was happening when one of the devices was connected to the network wirelessly over WiFi, and the other was wired, with WiFi disabled.

Enabling the WiFi for the wired device has solved the problem: mouse and keyboard can be shared as expected.

Hope this helps someone.

M1 macbook pro here seuoia 15.4. had the same issue when just upgraded to it. i think some settings were set to default(?)

in the end i solved the problem by doing the following hope it helps:>

Search "universal" in settings (cuz i cant find it) > it's under Display > Universal Display > tick all

and then go to main display setting

Display > link to keyboard and mouse

I continue to have UC problems, and I have determined it breaks in the same way each time.

  • My MM is the "primary" computer, with the Apple keyboard and mouse initially paired here.
  • The MBP is the secondary computer
  • UC may work for 10-15-20 minutes, but at some point things freeze.
  • The only solution is that I must use the MBP touch pad to find open Systems Settings/Displays on the MBP.
  • The UC keyboard and mouse are frozen for both machines.
  • On the MBP, once I open Display settings, I first see only the only the main display, but then the UC seems to reestablish itself, and then you see the two machines and their display arrangement.
  • Once the MBP is showing UC and both displays, I am then able to begin using the keyboard and mouse across both machines.
  • As mentioned, UC may then work for many minutes, but never longer than perhaps 20 minutes or so, and then I must repeat the process above.
  • If I did not have the track pad available on the MBP, it might leave me up the proverbial creek, forcing hard restarts in either/both machines.

This continues to be a broken function.

Yes, I have done what many of done, such as signing out of iCloud on both machines, making sure both are fully updated, both even on the very same WiFi, etc.

This is a real PITA, and very unacceptable. Apple have not said my 2018 MM or my 2021 MBP are "too old" and unsupported, so I expect this to work in a seamless manner.

Apple is failing with the UC at this time.

I have had the problem since Sonoma and have found two possible solutions for myself (for MacBook Pro M1 Pro with MacMini M1):

1. turn on Bluetooth sharing on the involved Macs and restart.

or/and

2. delete all (including the Airpods) Bluetooth devices (except mouse and keyboard) - and restart. Then reconnect airpods etc.

Result: Universal control has been working as it should for days now.

Curious.

Well, UC mostly was working, but I just experienced another lock-up, where I had to use the MBP touch pad to move the cursor around, open Settings, and get to Displays. Once I did that, the UC sharing reestablished with the MM, and then I can continue to use the UC with the shared mouse and keyboard, between the MM and MBP.

Yesterday morning, I turned off UC on both the MBP and MM. I then logged out of iCloud/AppleID on both machines. After restarting both machines, and I had log back into iCloud/AppleID, then I went back into Settings/Displays to reactivate UC.

Yes, many days ago I had already update both machines the Sequoia 15.1.

It is working, but I have still experienced intermittent locking up, requiring me to open Settings/Displays to re-establish UC.

Better, but still not happy.

Stolas6...thanks so much for letting this thread know you called into Apple Support.

Since the upgrade to Sequoia 15.1, and restarts and toggling on/off of the universal control function, I have still encountered intermittent lock-ups.

One situation where the lock-up has been happening is when I may have my MBP in fullscreen, with my main MM in regular desktop viewing mode. I have found the mouse and keyboard will sometimes (no always) lock-up in this situation. The menu bar at the top of my MM will show my split/share icon for universal control, while the MBP's menu bar does not. This is one situation where I have needed to use the MBP trackpad to find the pointer, then go to Settings Settings, then Displays, and to ensure that keyboard/mouse sharing is on.

I may have to do this on the MM as well, even though the universal control icon in the Menu bar is showing it is active.

Over the last few days, I continue to encounter this situation (even without either computer in full screen mode), perhaps once per hour. It is quite the annoyance having to go through extra steps and toggles on/off.

Since Sequoia 15.1, the "reactivation" has been easier than before. However, it is still problematic.

Thanks

I don't want to speak too soon ... but ... after being frustrated that macOS Sequoia 15.3 seemed to do nothing, I bit the bullet and logged out of iCloud on both of my devices, rebooted them, and then logged back in.

It's been about 10 minutes, and it appears to be working.

I've tried this before, multiple times. I don't know what they have changed, or if it will fail shortly, but it appears to be stable. I'm amazed. Hopefully this will last, otherwise it's back to Teleport 1.3.5 for me (a free program, that runs reasonably well and never has this many problems--although, it's unsupported and unmaintained).

Good luck!
