What should I prefer a MacBook Air M1 or a MacBook Air M2?

I am a university student and intend to upgrade to M2..Currently using 2021 M1 and there is a discount for M1 but i am not sure if the M2 is all that different and hence would like your input.

Hey, Appreciate you for asking the question :D

It’s great that you’re considering an upgrade! Let’s break down the key differences between the MacBook Air M1 and M2 to help you decide:

Performance

Display

Camera and Audio

Battery Life

Both models offer up to 18 hours of battery life, so there’s no significant difference here.

Design and Ports

Price

Conclusion

If you need better performance, a superior display, and enhanced camera and audio quality, the M2 is a worthwhile upgrade. However, if you’re on a budget and your current M1 meets your needs, sticking with the M1 could be a smart choice, especially with the discount.

Do you have any specific tasks or applications you use frequently that might benefit from the M2’s enhancements?

Thanks & Regards,

Basu

FWIW, I would not bother with an M2 Mac and just go straight for an M3 MacBook Air. If money is an issue, you can purchase a refurbished M3 MacBook Air direct from Apple which will have the same full one year warranty as a new Mac and is also eligible for Apple Care+.

It is generally wiser if one wants to upgrade to upgrade to what ever the latest version of the device is available.

The most recent MacBook Airs use M3 chips – and there is a M4 chip in some iPad Pros now.

The M1 MacBook Airs were only available in the 13" size. The M2 and M3 MacBook Airs were available in both 13" and 15" sizes (although the 15" M2 MacBook Airs are discontinued now.)

M1 MacBook Airs lack a MagSafe 3 charging port.

You can custom-order 24 GB of RAM on M2 and M3 MacBook Airs. That wasn't an option on the M1 models.

M3 MacBook Airs can drive two external displays (with limitations) when their lids are closed. The limit for the M1 and M2 models is one external display, whether the lid is open or closed.
