iphone 8+ pairing with series 8 watch

Just bought a series 8 watch and it will not pair with my iphone 8 plus. Research indicates that it should pair with iphone 8 plus if it has software update 16 or better. My phone is at 16.7. Can anyone help?

What version of watchOS is on your Apple Watch? If it's watchOS 10, that requires an iPhone XS or iPhone XR or later running iOS 17 or later. If it's watchOS 11 that requires an iPhone XS or iPhone XR or later running iOS 18 or later. Your iPhone 8 Plus cannot run anything newer than the iOS 16.7 is has on it now.

Regards.

Where did you buy the watch? Was it used? Had it been unpaired from the phone it was originally paired with if it was used? If you bought a used Apple Watch, which wasn’t prepared properly for a new user, you won’t be able to pair it with your iPhone. If this is your situation, return the watch for refund or get whoever you bought it from to remove the watch from their account. Apple will not help you if this is your situation.
