Native Email App - Sync/Fetch Issue - iOS 18

Upgraded my Iphone from iOS 17 to iOS 18. Native mail app was working fine under 17 but since updating to 18, there seems to be an issue with the fetching of emails. I have several emails setup with the native Mail app (yahoo email, gmail email, another AT&T email that utilizes yahoo) and it seems to be affecting them all, most definitely the yahoo based emails.

In a nutshell, I have no issues sending emails real time. If I access the Mail app, it will sync and receive any new emails. It's basically acting like I have Fetch setup for manual receipt versus automatic or at intervals. If I am not actively in the Mail app, it doesn't attempt to sync automatically under normal use.

Example, I could not have picked up my phone for 30 minutes to an hour and when I unlock the phone, the mail apps "App Badge" will still show the same number of unread emails as when I locked it. However, if I open the mail app, new emails will drop in. There are also times where the "App Badge" might actually show more unread emails compared to when I locked the phone, but when I open the app, none of the new emails have actually downloaded, only the notification indicating that the app at least detected more were out there.

I have deleted the accounts and re-added them with no change. I have adjusted the fetch settings with no change.

The one thing I have found that seems odd, and I don't know if the phone is just trying to do something weird with power consumption in attempts to maintain better battery life or if it's just a weird coincidence, but I have found that anytime my phone is on a charger (could be a cable charger, wireless charger, etc.), the mail app not only sees the emails but downloads them real time like it did in iOS 17. As soon as I remove the charging from the phone, it goes back to not fetching real time anymore.

I did report this via Apple's feedback system, but that was before I discovered the charging aspect to this equation. Figured I would post as an FYI to something I have found with my sync issues in case it helps in their troubleshooting as I don't expect many to have an actual resolution to some of these sync issues at this time.

Update 2/1/2025

Not perfect, but for me, 18.3 has improved the issues. As long as I have "Fetch" settings configured to fetch every 15 minutes, I appear to be having my emails pulled into my Mail app now. If I see the a number show up, or increase, on the "App Badge" now, when I go into the mail app, emails are now showing up as already downloaded, instead of having to wait for them to populate. Of course, anything between the 15 minute refreshes may then drop in when you access the app.

However, if I set the "Fetch" settings to 'Automatically', the emails do not appear to be automatically fetching like before iOS 18. Hopefully Apple will continue to tweak this and ultimately fix it altogether, but at least this is a positive step. Every 15 minutes doesn't help for when you need to see that one important email hit real time, but most of the time, 15 minutes fetches is not going to hinder too many things.

Hope for those experiencing similar, or slightly different issues, will also see an improvement with the 18.3 update.

I concur. 18.3 appears to have fixed the issue. Regarding the "Automatically" setting, the fine print indicates that this is only done when the phone is connected to power and on wifi. I've never used this setting because it was unclear to me what the phone would do if these preconditions were not satisfied. 15 mins is adequate for my purposes.

@Taittinger1980 sending feedback is always the very first thing I do, before visiting the forums. Sort of an issue is, that feedback for the mobile Mail App is not an option, so you have to write your feedback generally for iPhone.

I also didn't want to reset the complete device, but deleted all accounts, then the app, restarted the device, reloaded the Mail app and set it up fresh. That should be enough for any user to do.

Would you mind trying out the following? Head over to Mail > Notifications > adjust notifications (or maybe manage notifications - my language is set to German). Tap the account to adjust and even if there is a specific sound selected, select it again 'till you hear it. Then send yourself an e-mail to that account and check if you get a notification with sound and maybe vibration-pattern.

That worked for me, sadly only once, but I'm able to repro that.

I have or perhaps Gmail has fixed this issue? I first went into my settings and switched the native mail setting to Gmail. Then I switched it back to the Mail app and turned off all alerts "lock screen', "notification center", and, "banners". I sent myself an email and was then able to get a notification sound. Then I started turning each alert back on by checking that box. First I turned back on "lock screen" then sent a test email to my Gmail account. I again received a notification sound from the Mail app. Then I would go back to Mail app settings and try to check the next box and see if that worked as well. So I checked "notification center" and sent another email. I received a notification sound again. Then finally I checked the last one "banners" and sent ,myself another email. It worked again! Maill app notification sound have returned to my Iphone again. Works when my iphone is locked and unlocked. :)

I also stopped getting sound notifications from the iOS mail app and I am using a Gmail account. I have worked with apple customer service and they verified all of my settings were correct. Restarting my phone doesn’t work.Deleting and reinstalling my account doesn’t work. Reset network settings doesn’t work. Apple support says that I need to completely erase my phone and reinstall software and then set up from scratch but others I have spoken to tell me that doesn’t solve the problem either. I have submitted feedback several times to Apple feedback. Let’s hope that they listen to the feedback because I don’t think they read the comments on the forums. Just type in Apple Feedback in your browser and fill out the form. If enough people do, maybe they will fix the problem in the next update.

I'm on 18.1.1 using a 16 plus. native email app not getting my google mail at all, not just notifications but not at all even when I refresh. having to add gmail to my phone recently to get the mails sucks. I've done and re-done the fetch / push settings etc. no change. the password is correct because my other things like calendar from google are all syncing correctly.

I also have my issues after the update to iOS 18. Here the Mail App notifies for new incoming email ONLY ONCE, then silence. It affects accounts that don't support push-notifications. The first fetched (polled) mail will be notified for each account that I'm polling, but the next notification will silently be added into the notification-center. Without sound or vibration, I missed a lot of new email. Bad for my me and my partners.

I've checked all settings. Deleted and re-added the accounts. Deleted the app itself and started with a fresh setup, to no avail.

The Apple representative had me do what you recommended and it, too, was unsuccessful and didn’t work. I spent over an hour on the phone, screen sharing, with a tier two technical support representative. He checked ALL of my phone’s settings and app settings and saw that everything was correct. I’m hoping that an update will fix this issue.

I do want to thank you for trying to offer me help 🙏
