delete time machine from Mack Book Air

Time Machine is full, cannot delete old backups.

I want to delete the time machine external drive, so far I have not been able to deleted from applications.

If you want to delete the backups (and start over, which would be a good idea), you can use Disk Utility to format the drive (as APFS):

Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support


Then, in System Settings > General > Time Machine, delete the old backup (select it, press the (–) button at the bottom). You can then click the (+) button and add the reformatted drive as a new backup disk.
