Depends on the app. Many Social Media apps do consume a tremendous amount of WiFi data as they are also interested in gathering as much details about you and your activities and sending it to their servers to sell to advertising companies.
It is often easier to check Cellular Data usage on your phone to identify these apps and their usage. There are more features to monitor Cellular Data than there is for WiFi Data. You can see how much cellular data each app consumes, but of course you have to allow the app to use cellular data. It is also best to get a sample for a day when you are not connected to WiFi to get a more accurate picture on app usage.

Another good indicator is by checking your Battery usage. The apps that are consuming the most amount of energy may also be transmitting data over WiFi. If you are exceeding your WiFi limits, the app is also using a good portion of your battery to do that.
