The current cheapest Apple Watch on the lineup is the Apple Watch SE, starting at $249 with GPS in US.
The Apple Watch Series 3 was discontinued 2022, whatever you buy, you should get an Apple Watch that is still supported.
Great information varjak paw! In addition, you should check out Apple Authorized Retailers, as they often offer discounts on Apple products, such as Amazon. Also, before the launch of a new product cycle, the existing inventory is typically discounted.

I would recommend 2nd Generation, as it’s current and affordable in the lineup of Watches. In AU, it starts at A$399.
You can of course shop around. Apple rarely if ever discounts current models, but authorized dealers can be different and may discount from time to time, particularly around holiday sales pushes. You can also look at getting a refurbished model from Apple:
