If AT&T, or some other company, had a breach, that doesn't mean that your phone got hacked.
What it means is that criminals got into the computers belonging to those companies – and took information that you probably would not want them knowing. I recently got a notice in U.S. mail from some health care company, saying that they had had a breach where the criminals got names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers.
In other words, a treasure trove of information with which to commit identity theft and financial fraud. The crooks would not be "hacking" anyone's phone with this information, but instead would be opening up fraudulent lines of credit, trying to get into people's checking and savings accounts, etc.
AT&T is claiming that this particular breach involves records of calls and texts, but not Social Security numbers, or dates of birth.
