I know now, after getting one that the Magic Keyboard is not backlit.
I need that option especially in low light/night situations. But does anyone know if the older Magic Keyboards have backlighting? Will it work for 2023 MacBook Air. I'd be willing to buy a used one..

No, sorry, the older Magic Keyboards (1st generation) do not have backlit keys either.
FWIW, Matias, Satechi and Macally make backlit keyboards for Macs. You can find them on Amazon.
I use my extended Magic Keyboard II by the light of my 32-inch LG display and there is sufficient illumination that I can see the keys. Otherwise, Logitech may have a Mac-compatible keyboard with illumination.
