macOS Notes in Sequoia very bad typing lag

THE PROBLEM

Typing text into my large (7000+ lines + images) note has very bad lag, but this is not true of my other notes (video at the bottom of this post).

ENVIRONMENT

I'm using Notes on my 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro running macOS Sequoia 15.0, though this same issue was happening under macOS Sonoma also.

DETAIL

The note itself is pretty big and includes images interspersed throughout. If I paste text-only into a file, it has just over 7000 lines:

If I export it to PDF, it is 242 pages.

No matter where I type in the note (top, bottom, middle), there is very bad input lag for everything I type.

WORK AROUND

As an experiment, I copied the entire note and pasted it into a new note. In the new note, all my typing comes up quickly, as I'd expect, with no input lag. I thought maybe the copy-and-paste lost some information, such as images, but when I export the new note to PDF, it is also 242 pages, and the file sizes are about the same (I did change the name/title at the top of both notes, to differentiate them, but the rest of the content is the same):

SAMPLE VIDEO

Finally, here is a screen capture video. In the video, there are two Notes windows.

  • The top window is the original note. When I type into this window reasonably quickly, there is terrible input lag.
  • The bottom window is the copy (where I pasted all the content from the first note).
  • Both notes are 7000+ lines long

Figured it out about 30 minutes ago. So, you have to go to system settings>Click your name with your photo icon with "Apple Account" labeled under it>iCloud>scroll down to "saved to iCloud tab>unselect "notes">done.

What you can do is send all notes you've been working with from your device to another, such as your iPhone, then send them back to your MacBook with the above settings still in place. I use AirDrop for this process and it works like a charm.

The lag will be gone.

Peace.
