watch 8 side button

My wife has the watch 8 and had (past tense) a protective shield on the watch. A few days ago she was unable to push in the side button (not the crown). She says the side button used to stick out flush with the outside of the protective shield and now it is flush with the watch case. This is why she no longer has the shield on the watch.

I've read a number of items related to how to 'unstick' the button and tried a couple. The problem is the button ISN'T stuck. It's just so recessed she can't push the button with the shield in place.

Suggestions please.

The side button on every Watch I've had has been flush with the bezel. It shouldn't, however, be recessed. That would indicate that there has been some damage.
