Airpods Pro 2 noise cancellation worse after firmware update 7A294

The active noise cancellation on (at least) the AirPods Pro 2 is much worse after firmware update 7A294, including 7A302. The noise cancellation effect seems noticeably weaker now, roughly 50-70% as effective. Qualitatively, the effect is now closer to a slightly quieter adaptive mode. Essentially, I can now practically hear everything at a reduced volume, and my Sony 1000XM5 headphones now perform much better than my AirPods Pro 2, and this wasn't the case until the firmware/iOS 18 update.

Troubleshooting steps I've tried:

  • Cleaning the AirPods and tips (gentle surfactant/alcohol wipes, Blu-Tack), although they were already clean
  • Replacing the tips (they were already pristine)
  • Changing tips and ensuring proper fit
  • Resetting the AirPods
  • Toggling all settings on and off (Off, Transparency, Adaptive, Noise Cancellation)
  • Ensuring I hadn't accidentally selected something other than the noise cancellation mode
  • Having the AirPods replaced at the Apple Store

None of the above remedied the issue.

Some examples and context:

  • I can now fully make out conversations on the train in Tokyo, which I wasn't able to do that up until a day or two ago. To wit, train announcers are now less distant and audible. I can now hear people conversing on the other side of the carriage, and at one point, I was able to make out the music leaking out of someone else’s headphones...
  • I can now make out talking heads playing at low volume on a TV in another room.
  • I can now make out external sounds when ANC and Background Sounds (Dark Noise) are active at the same time, and up until the most recent update this combination was closer to being fully isolated.
  • Background music in convenience stores is now fully present, where as prior to the update I couldn't hear a thing.
  • I now no longer bother swapping to Transparency when my girlfriend is trying to talk to me across the room, because I can hear everything she has to say while noise cancellation mode is active. In the past, having to toggle between settings was a source of annoyance for us.

The situation is particularly disappointing, as I once adored these headphones, and the degradation of the noise cancellation effect makes the AirPods Pro 2 essentially more annoying than anything else.

If I’m not mistaken, I may have found a workaround for this. I believe I’ve identified a bug in the “adaptive audio” feature with the Generation 2 Pros. Although your adaptive audio feature may be disabled, go into settings and tap on your AirPod Pro 2 set. Then scroll down to audio and then select adaptive audio. After that, set it to “less noise” so that you’ve basically got nothing coming in. I don’t know if this is the exact sequence involved (I went through soooooooooo many different settings last night), but after I did that it completely drowned everything out (finally!!!!!) Even as I’m sitting here typing this, it would have already started letting more noise in at this point. There would be certain sounds that it would try to drown out (heat, fans, humidifiers), and while doing so, it sounded like I was on the freeway with my car window rolled down. Not anymore!!! Works well now 🤩

Tja, I keep my fingers crossed for you, thats yours remain in this good anc condition.

but honestly I am sure that there are either a lot of people out there who do not notice any difference because they use their AirPods differently (louder music where the lag of high frequencies is not that obvious, or they listen in quieter environments) or the "roll out" of the ANC reduction happens incrementally.

so, the chances are high, that you already have it and dont pay attention to it or u ll be the next one.;)

Another using letting Apple know I am in the same boat. My wife got me Air Pros 2 for Christmas and I was so excited for the “improved” noise cancellation over the original Air Pods Pro that I own.

As soon as I tried them out of the box,

I said, “Is noise cancellation even working?”

If this does not get fixed soon I will be returning these.

Hello, I have the same issue with my airpods pro 2.

I thought it was a problem

with the tips, so I bought brand new ones with a cleaning tool kit but the problem was still there after replacing them.

After some research I found your post on reddit and what I feared came true. Apple literally deleted the most important feature of this product.

I'm done with them. I'm out of the ecosystem.

I'm selling my Iphone 13 mini, my airpods pro and my watch series 6. I'm going OnePlus with the phone and Sony for the earphones.

And I went back to Qobuz.

Enough is enough.

So I have further bad news. I had complained to Apple and they replaced mine via Apple Care. Been using the new ones for a few days now and the NC is equally bad. It works for some noises but a lot of things which were usually very soft in the past like voices come through as clearly as without having them in my ear.

It baffles me that Apple by now hasn't realized or payed attention to this problem and released an update.

If I was into conspiracy theories I would've said they want us to all upgrade to the next version when it comes out sometime this year. If a software fix isn't released for this soon, I'm so done with Apple.

Just got brand new 7A294s today and will be returning them because of this. I was so looking forward to being able to focus at work, and can't believe I didn't see all these forums complaining about the ANC changes before I purchased, as I usually do really good research.

Commenting to pile on so hopefully something changes. I am genuinely so sad and really hoped these would be a solution. If anyone has found any comparable solutions for sound sensitivity that are buds and not over-ear headphones, please feel free to reply and make a suggestion.

Same issue here. I had to fight with Apple for them to send me a new pair even though I have AppleCare+. They said I had to send mine back without a replacement until mine were fixed. I told them absolutely not, I paid for express replacement and I want express replacement. The guy argued with me for a while but he finally relented. I got my new set today and I was so excited. That excitement was short lived. As soon as I put them in, same issue. Very, very disappointing considering what I paid for these. I’m looking for a better alternative if anyone has any suggestions.

I can even hear myself snap my fingers on writing at my keyboard, something I definitely could not before.

I keep checking whether transparency is on instead of noise cancellation - it is not.

The change is enormous. Noise cancellation was the only reason I bought AirPods Pro 2, and now the feature is essentially completely gone. This will spread quickly by word of mouth and inevitably hurt their sales.

Apple needs to fix this ASAP. I was gonna upgrade to AirPods Pro 3 when they come out but that feels like a major gamble now considering the lack of noise cancellation.

I was so impressed with the noise canceling feature in my AirPod Pros, that I literally convinced my mother, my boss, my girlfriend, my brother, and two of my best friends to purchase a pair… they absolutely loved after I showed them how you could make the world disappear. This was very very convenient, especially for one of my friends who works in a jewelry factory, in a very, very noisy environment, where (to make matters worse) his boss was always blasting music he hated. When I started to notice the decline of my AirPod Pro noise canceling I called him to check if this was a malfunction of mine and he told me he was noticing the same and that he already had bought a pair of headphones from a different brand because he couldn’t stand living without that feature that Apple just blatantly took away from us. now, when I go to the gym, my music has to fight against the horrible music. They play there and it’s maddening to a point where sometimes I just give up listening to music or listening to a podcast.

I really hope Apple will fix that in the next upgrade or at least bring it back in the next generation, otherwise, I will also have to search for a different brand.
