I have pictures stored on the desktop of my iMac. I want to move them to "Photos" on same device. When I open the picture file, click "File" and "Move to", there's no option for "Photos". Can someone help me? This should be a simple task so I must be missing something obvious (but not to me!).

In Photos, go to the File menu and choose Import. You can then point it to your pictures in Finder folders.
The pictures aren't moved; they are copied into the Photos Library. After I do the import, I transfer the Finder pictures to an external drive for backup.

Another option is to open the Photos app and then drag and drop the photos to the Photos app. You can select multiple photos (via command click or shift click) before dragging. As Richard noted, your photos are copied, not moved.
Open the Photos app and click Import on the File menu.
