2024 ipad air (2902) freezing repeatedly after 18.0 update

My essentially brand new Ipad Air was working fine until I installed 18.0. Now it freezes repeatedly. An authorised repair store told me my software was to blame…

1. Force Restart Your iPad Air

When in doubt, a good old restart can do wonders. This method refreshes your system and clears out any minor glitches that might be causing the freeze. Here’s how you can force restart your iPad:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  3. Hold down the Power button until you see the Apple logo, then let go.

This will restart your iPad, and hopefully, it will stop freezing!

2. Check for App Updates

Sometimes apps haven’t yet been optimized for the newest iPadOS version, which can lead to freezing. Updating your apps could solve the problem:

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right corner.
  3. Scroll down to Available Updates and tap Update All.

This ensures your apps are up to date and compatible with iPadOS 18.0.

3. Reset All Settings

If the freezing is still happening, it could be due to corrupted settings that aren’t playing nicely with the new update. Resetting all settings (don’t worry, it won’t delete your data!) can help:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

This will reset things like Wi-Fi passwords and preferences but could stop the freezing without touching your personal files.

4. Free Up Storage Space

iPadOS 18.0 might need more storage than the previous version, and a lack of space could be causing the freezing. Here’s how to free up some room:

  1. Go to Settings > General > iPad Storage.
  2. Check the list of apps and delete any you don’t use, or offload large files that aren’t essential.

Having more space can help your iPad run smoother.

5. Update to the Latest iPadOS

Apple usually releases quick bug-fix updates after a major release, which could solve freezing issues. To check for any new updates:

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. If you see an update available (like iPadOS 18.1 or 18.0.1), tap Download and Install.

A small update could be all it takes to fix the issue!

6. Reinstall or Restore iPadOS via Recovery Mode

If the above steps haven’t worked, you might need to reinstall iPadOS. Don’t worry, this process will help you start fresh with a clean copy of the software:

  1. Connect your iPad to a Mac or PC using a USB cable.
  2. Open Finder on a Mac or iTunes on a PC.
  3. Put your iPad into Recovery Mode:
    • Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
    • Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
    • Hold the Power button until the Recovery Mode screen appears.

  1. In Finder or iTunes, choose to Update or Restore your iPad.

This should reinstall the latest version of iPadOS and fix any deeper software issues.

7. Check for App or Peripheral Conflicts

Sometimes, external accessories or certain apps might not get along with the new update, causing your iPad to freeze. Try this:

  1. Disconnect any accessories (like keyboards or other devices).
  2. Restart your iPad without any peripherals connected.

If the freezing stops, one of your accessories may be causing the problem.

8. Contact Apple Support

If you’ve tried everything and your iPad is still freezing, it’s time to get in touch with Apple Support. They can help with more advanced troubleshooting or recommend a repair if there’s a hardware issue involved.

Summary

Freezing issues on the iPad Air after updating to iPadOS 18.0 can happen due to various reasons—outdated apps, system overload, or even software bugs. To fix this, try restarting your iPad, updating your apps, freeing up storage, resetting your settings, or reinstalling iPadOS through recovery mode. If nothing works, Apple Support is your best bet for further help.
