Can I save photos to 2 locations and have it update both when I add more?

I have all my photos in the photos app on my Mac. I was wondering if there is a way where I could have secondary copy of those photos as a backup in a different location (external drive) and if I could set it up to automatically update and add any new photos to this location as well as my photos app location?

Does 'Consolidate' in Apple Photos copy or move images? I'm trying to backup a Referenced Apple Photos library (I know, I know, referenced libraries are a pain), and have come up with the idea of copying the library to a new location (external drive) and then consolidating to bring over all the original images. My question is, does this copy (I guess it does but want to be sure) the originals to the new location, or does it 'move' them (ie. copy and delete). I want to have a portable version (without iCloud!) but want to keep my original library intact and safe. Thanks in advance for experience and advice!

Using a backup version of System Photos Library. Will iCloud recognize it when I set is as my new System Photos Library? Due to size of my System Photos library, I keep it on an external drive. It became corrupted, with unrepairable permissions, so I am now using a backup of the System Photos library, which has been copied to a RAID which will be my new location for the library. When I switch on "make this my System Photos Library" in Photos > Settings > general, I get the warning iCloud will be switched off, all photos not downloaded will be removed from my mac. Does not make a lot of sense, how can photos that are not downloaded be removed from a Mac, if they have not been downloaded to it? But my principle question is, when I switch to a new System Photo Library, which is identical to my original System Photo library (except for a most recent addition of photos from my phone), will it recognize it as the same contents to what is currently in iCloud? or will the original library in iCloud disappear, and the new one be entirely uploaded? (mine is 600GB, so I would like to avoid that) Since any drive hosting a System Photo Library can fail, I imagine that iCloud could recognize a user assigning a backup. However it is not obvious it can. Any insights greatly appreciated.

What you need is app that will do incremental back ups. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.

Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Yes. You can use an external drive as your Time Machine backup destination. Then, your Mac will backup whenever you make changes. Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support
