I purchased an iPhone Pro Max which uses a Lightning charger plug, my new iPad uses a USB C charging plug. People are telling me that my new iPhone should have an USB C plug like the iPad. I bought the iPhone from a Verizon store anyone else have this issue ?

Depends on what model of iPhone you bought.
All recent iPhones use usb c, old models still use lightning.
Apple stops selling old models of IPhone Pro or Max as soon as the new models are released.
Verizon apparently doesn’t.

If your iPhone has a lightning charger, then you do NOT own an iPhone 15 Pro Max.
