Intel iMac goes black during startup after Apple logo appears

Tried restarting in safe mode, reset NVRAM, recovery mode, still shuts off after about 90 sec with gray screen and progress bar. Also tried Target Disk mode with Thunderbolt 1 cable to a 2014 MacBook Pro, the zap logo appeared but it wasn't om the list of disks. Could it be a failed hard drive or old power supply?

What is the exact model of your iMac? You can get this information by entering the system serial number on the check coverage page here (please do not post your serial number on the forum since it is considered personal information):

Try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected.

More than likely you have some sort of hardware issue with this iMac even if the diagnostics don't report any problems.

Yeah there are no diagnostics because it never finishes booting up, just Apple logo, 60% progress bar in 90 sec, then black.

Are you saying this is the Apple Diagnostics? The diagnostics are not as complex as macOS & may finish booting even if macOS gets stuck.

Please provide the exact model. Knowing the exact model may allow us to provide you with other options for testing the iMac.
