Calculator App Issues in iOS 18

Is anyone at Apple addressing the issues with the iOS 18 calculator app on iPhone? Pressing equal after entering an equation and solving at once doesn’t allow you to calculate again without retyping everything. I use the calculator multiple times a week as a counter at work and losing this functionality is incredibly impactful.

I’ve also found that the calculator will move to scientific notation in the six figure range in vertical mode. This seems excessive, considering the old calculator would display millions without switching to scientific notation. I’m really confused why these “features” were added to the new calculator as opposed to leaving actual working features from before.

Just downloaded PCalc, per this recommendation, since it’s an app you have to pay for, I bought it(as I refuse to pay a monthly subscription for pretty much anything(like some of the third party calculators want) a one time purchase was a good option. At first I freaked out because the equal wouldn’t repeat the operation, but luckily, it’s just a setting in its gear menu, and now I once again have a functional calculator. I think it’s ridiculous that apple would throw away basic functionality, but at least I can have a useable calculator now. Thanks Idris!

the more I dig into PCalcs features the more awesome it seems. When you click the 42 button (awesome reference) it has mathematical constants for all sorts of fields. Like it’s fully functional for my purposes, but I can also just geek out with it for awhile too, and figure out things I have no direct need to for fun 😀

Why is it when you do an upgrade (iOS 18.1.1) that’s for security issue you mess with everything else? I.e. calculator, calendar and photos to name a few!!!

I didn’t mess with anything; I’m just another user like you, and like everyone else in this user-to-user forum..

and 18.1.1 didn’t mess up anything on any of my family’s iPhones, so you need to find out what you did to break stuff.

What I saw was for a current upgrade 18.1.1

I didn't say it wasn't. What I said was "iOS 18.1.1 didn't bring any changes that I'm aware of to Photos, Calendar or Calculator. All of the major changes were made with the release of iOS 18.0." What means is the Calculator is the same in iOS 18.1.1 as it was in 18.0.

Anyway I imagined the idea was to update with
the most current version so did not see a pre version.

Yes, you should do that. I never said otherwise. In fact, the response was directed at someone else entirely.

I agree totally. I hate this change. I have to retype the entire equation every time. I wanted to enter $1000 and see what would happen if I got 12% interest over 40 years. Before, I only had to hit the enter button 40 times. Now I have to retype the entire calculation each time. Why fix something that’s not broken? This is not better at all. It’s actually worse.

Let’s imagine that the way the calculator works in iOS 18 was the way it always worked, then Apple issued a new update that changed it to the way it worked previously. I’m certain there would be just as many complaints about THAT change as there is this change. The single common element is CHANGE. Some people don’t like change in anything, regardless of what the change brings. But following that philosophy we would still all be using IBM PCs from 1980, because there were screams of anguish when Windows was first released; why had Microsoft ruined the perfectly good MS-DOS? I remember; I was there, and my first thought was exactly that.

Cats don’t like change either.

Just trying to do the family budget and now can’t simply subtract and see total then subtract another. This app is now unusable for normal work. Along with the changes to the pictures where I can’t just see all pics anymore, seems a general dumbing down of basic apps. Ever heard the rules don’t touch what isn’t broke or keep it simple?

I want my basic calculator back! I can’t even balance my checkbook! What can I do to get the calculator back to what it was forever?

Then want will be your master. The calculator app is what it is, because thousands of users HATED the calculator before iOS 18; the changes were made to satisfy those users. I truly feel sorry for you if you can’t find any other way to balance your checkbook, but I’m sure you will find a solution.

And you will be enlightened if you read the 5 pages of comments that you just added to.

I absolutely HATE the new calculator on iOS 18. It is unusable. As many others have said before, the calculator is only useful if you are 7 or younger. This is the worst thing Apple has ever done. The only way Apple can save themselves is if they give back the functionality of the original version of Calculator for those who are over the age of seven. I will not use this Calculator ever again unless it is fixed and most likely I will delete this app from my phone if possible because it is so absolutely, utterly useless. I guess I’ll have to get an app that calculates at the adult level.
