why is slide show no longer an option with hidden photos ios

The slideshow feature has been made in incredibly limited. Even in an regular album, The slideshow now has no options. Used to be all kinds of customizations and options now there’s only one option. It’s loop or not loop. You can’t control anything about the slideshow, there’s no options at all no speed change no Music selection. You have to create a memory and then change your memory and it’s still very limited. Is there an option for no music? no, Speed option? no, Fade between photos option? No reason to get third-party app for slideshow, yes.

Hidden isn't an album in the same sense as others, so the options are different. I would not have imagined that someone would want a slideshow of their hidden pictures, so that may be why that is not an option.

But I have had to hide and un-hide pictures (mostly when talking to people about stuff like this,) and I did this: I selected all my hidden pictures, chose save to Album, made a new album (with the +) and named it "My Hidden." Then I put all the pictures there. It's weird-- the new album will look totally empty, since the pictures are all hidden! But then you go to Hidden, select all, and un-hide them. Then they all disappear from the Hidden album, because they're no longer hidden. But you can now see them in My Hidden, and you can make a slideshow. When you're through, you can select all and mark them hidden, and they will disappear and show up in the Hidden view.

Normally, when you un-hide several pictures, they reappear wherever they came from, scattered all over the place, so it's difficult to find them and hide them, again. But with the above process, they can all be found in one place for re-hiding.

Apple might have done this to ensure/uphold security and privacy for customers. A hidden album now requires Face ID by default and Apple may have disabled slideshows to prevent accidental exposure of sensitive photos during playback. These types of things are a trade-off's Apple has to make in order to balance promise of security and privacy and upholding functionality and features throughout the OS.

Not likely. And people were asking for it. It’s why it happened. Apple reads all user feedback, conducts customer surveys. You need to realize you are not the only user in town. Perhaps you should submit feedback instead of snarking at Apple here.

I see nobody else has replied, so I'll toss in my two cents...

We users here are not privy to Apple's reasons for changes they make to their products. Maybe they just never thought anybody would want to use the slide show tool on the Hidden album and so didn't protect that ability. Or it's just a bug. Have you reported it to Apple?

It was there for a long time, right up until my phone updated to iOS18. You would open the Hidden album, chose "Select" and then select photos. Then, in the circle with the three dots, you could choose the command "Slide show" (or "Create slide show" - I forget the exact wording). You could change duration and adjust transitions, just like with any other slide show in Photos. Now it's gone.

I guess Apple doesn't think things through. There are any number of reasons why someone might want to make a slideshow of hidden photos - use your imagination. Now we can't do that anymore and it makes a lot of us wonder, why did they even bother to change this?

But thanks for the work-around ... it's awkward but at least it's possible.

I found the answer. They buried the setting, but it’s still there.

You can still set it under screen saver> memories, and slideshows> Home sharing>photos>albums

i am quite suprised how apple of all companies would create the area of photos and albums new and really get it wrong. i had really loooved the slideshow feature. the “movie” doesn’t come even close to it.

Horrible update, removed a feature that I used all the time with my family! And created a bunch of auto settings that are super annoying! Is there anyway to uninstall this update since Apple probably won’t listen and reinstall the slideshow option… 😑

While I do not have an answer and I have no need for a slide show with hidden items. The slide show as it was, which worked very well, is gone for non-hidden items as well. Also, since there are ghost images that show up of web pages that have been closed and the history totally cleared in Safari, they seem to be missing the mark on privacy anyway. Other Apple apps suffer from these ghost images as well. It is a curiosity of how the images from apps are cached. I'm sure most of the time, the phone appears faster because of these cached images of apps. My suggestion is, as others have said, find another photos app. I will muddle through with this new downgraded apple photo's app, because my needs are few.

Being frank here, they just took away the side show feature to our spank banks!

although, as many other people said, there could be many reasons one would want to access the slide slideshow on this and other Albums. I Keep antiques in mine that my partner doesn’t want us wasting our money on… And I’d love to show my other antique friends what I would love to buy, but my partner won’t let me… In her defense we need the money for many other important things.

Having a little trouble finding that still…maybe I’m blind but where do I get to the screen saver to follow the progression?

that suggestions sound great but i can’t find “screen Saver” anywhere in settings, can you be more specific?

I have the same issue. I used that feature often. The new version is terrible. They need to go back to the version that worked.
