What is the exact year model of your 27" iMac...?
see > Identify your iMac model - Apple Support
This is very important, because the 2017 and 2019 models use different RAM modules.
The 2017 iMac uses DDR4 PC4-19200 2400MHz modules.
The 2019 iMac uses DDR4 PC4-21300 2666MHz modules.
Hi ,
thanks for that.
had a look at the link and explains everything .
any other recommendations to get a little more performance and life out of the older iMacs would be appreciated.
If you do not have an ssd drive then using an external ssd boot drive would improve performance. I use an external TB drive on my 2019 27” iMac
Thank you.
I spotted the difference before ordering x4 16Gb modules to max out the RAM to 64Gb.
The 2017 I have has a 1TB HDD . Will definitely be look into getting an external SSD boot drive...anything to tweek the performance!
Thank you!
Really appreciate the help and feedback . I would never have considered the impact of an SSD drive on performance over and above the RAM.

With that 1 TB HDD, the slowness is likely due to the slowness of the mechanical drive (HDD), especially on a modern MacOS using APFS, which is very slow on mechanical drives. So unless you change to an SSD, adding all that memory will have little to no impact on performance.
