After updating my phone to iOS 18, I am now stuck in SOS mode. How do I get my cellular service to connect again?

I was running iOS 17.7 on a iPhone 12 Max and during the day on 30 SEPT 2024, my iPhone went into the SOS mode all day. My wife has the same iPhone however is running iOS 17.6.1 and didn’t have the SOS issue. I updated to iOS 18 and the problem persisted. After work I was on my way to a Verizon Store near me (1800 hrs Eastern) and noted at a stop light that I had three bars, then four! Not sure what happened, yet I’ve not had the SOS issue since…

The SOS mode is really frustrating as once can’t receive calls, make “normal” calls and even had issues sending text messages to a non-iPhone…. ARGH! I hope to not experiance that ever again!

This is an issue with the SIM card being destroyed by the update. They are doing away with SIM cards and the updates will destroy them. You have to call Verizon or whoever your carrier is and have them reset the phone without the SIM card. Then you destroy the SIM card, not needed anymore. They told us this will happen to every phone we have when we do the update. If the 17 update didn’t do it, 18 will. Good times.
