I ordered Ipad with free pencil pro

I recently ordered an iPad that came with a free Apple Pencil Pro promotion. However, I noticed that I was charged for the Pencil Pro separately, even though it was supposed to be free. Will this amount be deducted from the iPad price, or can you help clarify why this happened and how it can be resolved?

While the purchase invoice will include the retail cost of the Apple Pencil, the iPad cost will have been reduced by the same amount.

As such, you have not been disadvantaged - as the total invoice cost, that has been charged to your Credit Card, will still be no more that the original cost-price of the iPad prior to the equivalent discount being applied. Effectively, you have both a new iPad and Apple Pencil for the cost of the iPad alone.

Apple invoices in this manner to avoid potential fraud - where a new iPad is subsequently returned for full refund without also returning the Pencil.

When Apple has promotions where you buy a Mac and get a "free" gift card, the invoice often shows

  • The gift card charged at full price
  • The Mac charged at a discounted price (where the discount matches the value of the gift card)

The invoice looks odd, but the total bottom line isn't any different than if you bought the Mac for the advertised price, and were charged $0 for the gift card.

Apple might be doing things that way to discourage people from trying to

  • Order a Mac that comes with a "free" gift card
  • Return the Mac for a full refund, while
  • Keeping the "free" gift card

In other words, ripping off Apple for the value of the gift card without actually buying anything.

Maybe whatever "iPad + 'free' Apple Pencil Pro" promotion you are referring to works in the same way?
