Mac Mail - What is "On My Mac" and "iCloud" mailboxes ?

When using Mac Mail I notice that there is a mailbox called "On My Mac" and a mailbox called iCloud.

I m guessing that OnMyMac means mail is stored on my Mac.

And I am guessing that iCloud mailbox means that the mail is stored in the cloud so my other Apple devices can access mail.

Assuming I am correct Do I need both mailboxes?

Thanks

iMac 24″, macOS 14.6

Your assumption is correct.

I don't think you can delete either section, and you really shouldn't try.

On My Mac is useful for when you want to archive old e-mails locally. For example, I don't want to keep e-mail since 1998 in iCloud. Most of them pre-date iCloud anyway. So I keep these in "On My Mac" mailboxes, organized by year. I can easily export them to MBOX files and re-import then when I get a new computer.

Note that when I said "archive" above, I'm referring to the general usage of saving documents for posterity. I have no idea with the official "Archive" mailbox and feature in Apple Mail is supposed to do. I never use that.
