Need to transfer a mac's contents to one that is already set up

A year ago, my wife got a new macbook. I cloned her old mac onto the new one. For some reason she put off using the new one and now wants me to set it up again. Should I reset the new one to factory defaults first? If

so, how. Or, can I use the current Time Machine from her old mac to update the new one (which is set up & working, just missing a year's worth of her mods)?

You can. Either option is fine. If you choose to erase her Mac and migrate its content from its last Time Machine backup, that's what she will get.

Follow these instructions: Erase your Mac and reset it to factory settings - Apple Support.

After your Mac restarts, a setup assistant guides you through the setup process, as if you're setting up your Mac for the first time.

To restore its Time Machine backup, choose that option when it is offered upon setting it up.
