Black screen after disconnecting high performance screen sharing on Macbook Pro M1

When connecting from one M1 MBP to another M1 MBP using screen sharing, everything works as expected in standard mode. When connecting using high performance mode, the actual screen sharing session works as expected, but when I quit the screen sharing session, the M1 MBP that I connected to is stuck with a black screen.

The behavior makes it seem like the virtual display is never truly disconnected or released back to the main laptop display. The laptop screen backlight is completely off -- so it's not merely a blank screen, it's as if the laptop screen is completely disconnected.

The only thing I can do is turn off the MBP (either by holding the power button, or reconnecting to the screen sharing session from the other MBP and going to shutdown).

This behavior started in Sonoma, but has continued with Sequoia.

I love the high performance sharing mode, but I can't use it without having to completely shut down my connected M1 MBP when I am done.
