how do I get favorites in my address bar again?

When I click on the address bar, I get a pull down window with icons for my "Favorites".

To re-arrange them, you can just click and drag. However, I tried to remove a "favorite" that was a dead link by sliding it out of the frame. Now, all of the "Favorites" are gone and I can't get them back and all my searches lead to one result: "view -> show favorites" which adds the bar to the top of the window and doesn't fix this behavior.

SO:

Apple should fix this so that sliding the icon away removes it, and
Shorter term, Apple should tell us how to restore this behavior in "Favorites" search results, and
Can someone please tell me here and now how to fix it?

This is actually "Ventura 13.7" and not "Monterey", but Apple doesn't support that tag. It's the latest.
