Multitasking - any way to stop OS X from stealing focus from the app I'm in?

OS X has a habit of completing an operation in the BACKGROUND and then it switches me to that app that has completed it's task. In my opinion, an OS should never force me to go to an app if I did not select to do so. Also, some dialogues from other apps will float on top of a different app that I'm in and I can't get rid of it, it's just decided that I must see this dialogue until it's done doing what it's doing. Again, this is in a different app, not the app I'm in.

Is there a setting in Terminal or anywhere else to stop this from happening? I only want to see the app that I'm in, and I don't want the operating system to force me into a different app.

This is on a trashcan Mac Pro in Monterrey.

Thank you so much! I appreciate any helpful info.
