How to prevent my MacBook Pro from overheating?

My mac pro 2015 is running slowly. I read that overheating can be a problem. One night my husband was trying to use it to cast a sporting event onto our TV. I discovered that the small box in the cord that was plugged into the wall was very hot. If this is the reason, what do I do? What else can cause it to run slowly?
