Setting up an older iphone for international travel (sim card)

I cannot find the answer anywhere but I know I will here. I have an older iphone that is unlocked and a current iphone on AT&T. I want to use the old one as a travel phone as I travel to Africa a great deal, different countries normally and can get local sim cards cheap This will help avoid having to use wifi only calling on my main phone, and allow calls etc. when not in wifi range.

If I use my Apple ID on the second phone does the phone number then transfer and make the second phone my "new phone". I am OK with limiting the second phone on sharing, apps etc as it is really just for a call or text situation and a safety thing. I would not use the phone unless I was travelling internationally or needed it as a backup.

I do not want a phone number associated with the second phone until I put a sim card in. Any help out there?

If you log in with your Apple ID on the old iPhone, you will have the choice of having calls and messages forwarded to it from your regular Phone, but you can turn that off in Settings ➜ Apps ➜ Phone ➜ Calls on other devices, and Settings ➜ Apps ➜ Messages ➜ Text Message Forwarding.

Blue iMessages will arrive on both devices from all numbers and emails associated with your Apple ID, and there's no way to prevent this.

You may want to give the older iPhone a different Apple ID, just for Messages and FaceTime calls so it does not interfere with the regular use iPhone.

iCloud and iTunes & App Stores can retain your normal Apple ID.
