A software update is required to connect to iPad

older mac mini running High Sierra (can't update that any farther), new to me, 9 month old 2022 iPad pro 11' M2 with LOTS of room. Try to download the required software update and keep being told that there isn't enough room. My SSD drive in the mini has 18GB and the "fusion drive" (I have a dual drive mini set up) had tonnes. Don't know the problem here. There is lots of room on everything. I wanted to set-up my pro using the full back-up I made from my old, sadly slowing down, iPad air, on my computer. But it seems i can't even get the computer to connect to this new ipad without this update - which somehow seems to think there isn't enough room..

I think I have found the problem... Purgeable files!! Although I have 18GB available, there are 14GB of purgeable files... That brings my actuall available space down to only 4GB... I need a little over 4GB for this update. I am currently moving some large folders from my desktop (which is on the ssd - SSD is where the OS and apps are stored - all documents, etc are on my HDD) to the HDD and that will free up about 25GB of space! Fingers crossed.

Yes. It was the purgeable files that were blocking the download. Shifted about 25BG folder to my HDD and the update is downloading now.

Restart the Mac, and try again.

This update is unrelated to macOS itself, and is an update to Finder (or to iTunes, as far back as you are here) to allow it to recognize the new device.

Tech specs indicate macOS 10.13 is as old as it gets: iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) - Technical Specifications - Apple Support

Thanks. Yeah, I know my OS is getting very long in the tooth. I would love to update my OS, but can't. And not in a position to get a newer computer, when this one is still working just fine for my needs. But I think I can fix the problem by getting rid of a lot of purgeable files (moving them off the SSD)
