How can I resolve Apple Account association issues on my iPhone?

iPhone 13 Pro Max running iOS 18.0.01

The full warning which I just got when updating to iOS 18.0.1 is:

This Device is Already Associated With an Apple Account

If you turn on Automatic Downloads with your Apple Account, you cannot auto-download or download past purchases with a different Apple Account for 90 days.

The choices are: [Cancel] or [Transfer]

I purchased my iPhone from a friend who is "Apple knowledgeable" and he swears he went through all the steps Apple recommends before selling the iPhone to me but to me this alert would seem to indicate that the iPhone is in some way still associated with his Apple Account and I have no idea what to do or whether to click on [Cancel] or [Transfer]. Assuming [Transfer] would transfer the iPhone to my Apple Account, this would seem to be the appropriate choice but I welcome advice as to whether that is the correct choice.

Many thanks for any assistance.

He needs to go through the process again as the device is still attached to his Apple ID.

Did you recently change the Apple Account your phone was logged into? That's what it sounds like. If so, you need to wait until the 90 days is up before you can switch to a different Account.

I have a bought a new 2018 iPad Pro back in 2018 or 2019 but maybe two years ago it had a problem and they replaced it under AppleCare. Of course, the replacement is a refurbished unit. I knew this and was fine with it. However, I get this message now too and I am not so okay with that. I get it maybe twice a week. I also get it when I restart my device. For me it's a mild annoyance, hence why I have not called Apple.

From various articles, etc. it seems that there are two associations of an Apple device. There is the usual one we see which links it to our Apple ID and used by Find My Device, etc. When you look at your devices, this is the list of devices. Apparently, devices are also linked to your Apple Account (not Apple ID) in the back end. There is a difference apparently which I am not clear on. And this association was never used or visible until iOS 18.* so when we added/removed devices, this account association was never updated. With 18.*, this is not checked by Apple and we are having problems. If the device was only associated with one owner, there is no issue. Any device transferred has this issue. Also, based on my experience where I purchased my refurbished iPad from Apple directly, it appeara Apple was also not maintaining this association. Not sure how reliable this explanation is, but it does explain a lot if true.

I do plan on calling Apple about this, but given it happens once or twice a week, it's not a priority. I imagine, since I own an Apple device, if I tell them this bother me they should take steps to fix it ... or give me an actual brand new one! :-)
