Autofocus software problem?

The camera in my iPhones 12 mini worked just fine for years. Since a few weeks (before iOS 18) something odd is happening:

- When I open the camera, it refocuses several times and often struggles to find the focus point. No matter if for photo or video.

- Tapping to focus does not change the issue.

- When I switch to 0.5x it works just fine, which led me thinking it's just a technical malfunction of the standard camera

- But strangely when I switch to Pano or time lapse it also works perfectly Even with the main camera. So it can't be hardware issue, can it?

Because this looks like a software thing to me, there is also hope to fix it without replacing hardware.

Any suggestions or ideas what this might be?

Thanks for every hint!

(Soft and hard reset already tried, recent updates are installed)

I do not find any issue of Auto Focus on my iPhone 12 Pro iOS 18.0.1. So the issue can be device specific and not iOS related.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution! Please look in the right direction.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

Sorry for not being specific enough. When writing "before iOS 18" I meant to say, the problem already existed *before* the update. So I also think, you are totally right and it was not caused by a major update.

But I also think, I can exclude anything hardware-based (see the symptomatology above). That's why the title relates to a software problem.

Thank you for any further advice!
