Your iMac is too old to be an AirPlay Receiver using just the code built into macOS.

There are several third-party applications that can add a similar feature. One is AirServer . Another is Reflector . This AlternativeTo article lists some others. I'm not familiar with any, other than knowing they exist – so you'll have to do your own research as far as reviews and such.
Note that AirPlay is not as good as a hardware connection to a real monitor … the original version was largely a way to let you show photos and videos from your iPhone on your HDTV. So it may or may not be suitable for the purpose you have in mind.
