Worked fine for me with an old AirPort Extreme for years.
You may be able to return the power supply for a refund if it does not do what you want.
If the AirPort Extreme is not working, are you interested in getting it going again?
If the current power supply is making noise, are you interested in having a quiet power supply?
In other words, what is it that you want to do?
Right now, the condition of the AirPort Extreme power supply is like not fastening the seatbelt in your car.
You are OK, until it is too late.
If you want to use the AirPort Extreme, replace the power supply. One or more of the power supply capacitors are on the verge of failing. They will fail and some smoke might leak out and appear, but we don't know when.
If you don't want to use the AirPort Extreme, time to take it to the recycling center.
