Controlling another mac itunes

It seems very simple to me but perhaps not.

I have a NAS with an itunes server on.

I have a mac mini which I want to play music from (using the NAS itunes server)

I have a macbook I want to pick tunes to play from the mac mini above.

How do I achieve this without screen sharing which is at best clunky?*

Hi, now it's 2017 and I have exactly the same problem. I'm using my iOS devices and Remote Control to stream music from my Mac Mini to my hifi. It works just fine, but I'd really like an app in my MBP to do the same thing. Screen sharing is still clumsy.

The development of TunesRemoteSE mentioned above seems to have been terminated in 2012. Is there any newer app that does this?

I have been looking for a solution for this for several years, and to no avail. MacOS Sierra identifies the tunesremote download as being damaged, which prevents trying it out even after installing the legacy java files. Anyone has found an alternative? I have tried several software but none of them work on recent MacOS versions, as they all date back to several years.

Those apps control another copy of iTunes, regardless of where it gets its content. Do you perhaps mean that the NAS is sharing the library as with normal iTunes Sharing? If so, why do you not connect your MacBook directly to the stream from the NAS? What is it that you're trying to accomplish that you feel you need to connect to the Mac mini?

Well perhaps I have been unlucky but so far only 1 out of three has 'seen' that the external itunes is reading from a nas server.

Further more I want to Control itunes. all these little apps do is show me whats playing, and pick the next track.

Seriously we are in 2010 I would have thought this would have been nailed long ago. It would appear that in order to properly have access to itunes on another mac I have to purchase an iPod.

You must have misread the descriptions or not looked very far into the listing. All of these apps allow remote control of iTunes on another computer:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19333/tuneconnect

and there are probably others. Whether any of those will meet your needs I can't say with certainty, but they're worth a look.

Thanks Dave, suffice to say I have already visited all of these. Most of them are very out of date some back as far as 2004.

The closest is tuneconnect, which at least understands there is an itunes library but it never connects.

All I want (And personally I would have thought it existed) is the apple remote app currently on ipod available on the desktop.

I don't know, it seemed so simple! haha.

Yes I can use screen sharing, but that is so clunky. An elegant mac solution simply showing me what an external itunes was seeing was what I was after.

Thats not the question I asked though 😉

I have a shared user library its on my nas. the nas has an itunes server this dishes that library to all my macs perfectly.

My problem is I want the music to be controlled and played from my 'hifi' mac using my laptop, at the moment the only option is screen sharing which I do not think is particularly elegant.
